The grant will help it continue to address "challenges and potential solutions to the issue of food equity" and the "lack of access to healthy, affordable food in Long Island's most distressed communities," the Bethpage-based organization said in a Friday news release. Read more>>

The findings suggest that efforts to combat childhood obesity might best be aimed at parents and the foods available at home and outside of school.

Published January 19, 2012 / MyHealthNewsDaily

In the study, no link was found between children's weight gain and the amount of time between fifth and eighth grade they attended schools that sold junk food, the researchers said. Will Allen of Growing Power, Inc. and Chef Ann Cooper, the Renegade Lunch Lady will be the keynote speakers of the 2012 Small Farm Summit.

Will Allen, a former professional basketball player, is the founding CEO of Growing Power, a national nonprofit organization and land trust that supports people from diverse backgrounds, and the environments in which they live, by helping to provide equal access to healthy, high-quality, safe and affordable food.

Chef Ann Cooper is a celebrated author, chef, educator, and enduring advocate for better food for all children. In our nation where children are born with shorter estimated life expectancies than their parents because of diet-related illness, Ann is a relentless voice of reform by focusing on the links between food, family, farming and children's health and wellness.

In addition to these two terrific keynote speakers, the 2012 Small Farm Summit will feature educational workshops, interesting exhibits, fun entertainment and a community of folks interested in growing, eating and supporting a vibrant local agricultural community.
